The Sisters of Melanesia

The community of the Sisters of Melanesia is a Sisterhood of women within the Anglican communion who have answered the call of God to give themselves completely to His service.

The Church in Melanesia is able to achieve many things through the life and work of the Sisters that would not otherwise be possible, and reach out to many people, simply because they are women. The role that the Sisters have is that of supporting the ministry by implementing what the Church believes and teaches. The Sisters also serve as an example for young women and mothers by their dedicated way of life.

The work of CSM is to spread the message of the Good News of God and so enrich and strengthen the life of the people. Some of the involvements of CSM are:islander-woman

  • Chaplaincy to hospitals and/or prisons
  • Evangelism programme in its outreach to the Dioceses of the Church of Melanesia
  • Christian Care Centre, a place of safety for abused women and their children
  • Programmes in Bible study, confirmation classes and Sunday School
  • Visit and pray with the sick and elderly
  • Teach religious instruction in various Primary Schools
  • Counselling and other help where its needed

Part of their calling is also lived out in the daily life of the convent where a regular timetable of work and prayer is followed. Since they have no running water or electricity things take longer to do. Water must be carried, wood must be chopped for cooking, and dishes and laundry taken down to the river for washing. Sisters are also engaged in house cleaning, gardening, repair and maintenance of the houses using brush materials, sewing and handcrafts. All this makes up the Sisters' day to day work at the convent.

The following is an excerpt of a letter we received from the Sisters of Melanesia regarding the support that we have raised for them:

28 November, 2008

I would like to thank you for on behalf of the Community of the Sisters of Melanesia for your kind and timely donation. Our truck, which is our only mode of transport, broke down about 6 weeks ago. Since then it has been difficult to carry out our normal duties such as travel between Verana’aso, our headquarter which is 35km away and Honiara.

Please forward my thank you on behalf of the Community to those that kindly donated in your efforts. Your knid donation has reminded me of God’s favour. I pray God blessings on you.

In God’s service
Sr Catherine Rosa
